2003 Marconi Foundation Proxy Races

Class D (Mini-Mania)

The race

Bruce Welcker from Port Angeles, WA, entered the Monte Carlo Rally winning Mini of Paddy Hopkirk and just like in 1968, the car won by inches. Just one lap in fact over the harrying STP-Mini of Robert Cline Jr. The entry was very disappointing with only 4 cars, knowing that over 25 kits have been shipped to entrants last year. I guess that we should have enforced the $50.00 fine and make them contribute to the Marconi Foundation for Kids... Oh well. Dennis Hill's beautiful car and runaway Concours winner was greatly improved from last year but adding weight also caused it to loose the speed needed to keep up with the front runners. Back to the drawing board, the only thing left to do is bore the engine bigger or install a turbo. Marc Dodinot's car was nowhere as good as last year's and spent most of its racing time loosing its front wheels that were not so securely attached.

The racing was competitive indeed as the three first finished within 3 laps of each other.

The Concours d'Elegance

Dennis Hill's superbly executed car won by a mile. Its gorgeous watch-like chassis and the beautiful paint just deserved the win, no contest. Bruce Welcker's car was a nice and honest model, faithful to the original but lacking a bit of detail to get to the top position. Marc Dodinot's car also lacked the looks of last year's entry. Robert Cline's STP car was a bit rough on the edges but ran quite well and was the easiest to drive.
